FAQ

Common Questions

Everything you'd think to ask about theater packages, custom design, drop shipping, and how we do things.

How does drop shipping work?

Just like it sounds — when you purchase a theater or a smart home from us, we drop-ship it to you. You, a friend, or a handyman can install it yourselves. It takes a couple of days longer than a typical Amazon shipment, but assuming products are in stock, it gets to you pretty fast.

Can I really install it myself?

Yes — and we've had clients doing it for years. We carefully select products that meet our standards, and that can be easily installed by anyone. Our most popular theater package, the Aetherion Max, I set up with my son and no tools in about 30 minutes.

And don't worry — we've got a team here ready to walk you through setup and support the install. It isn't something you need to be afraid of.

Do you still install?

We get out to a few projects every year. Normally for larger projects like a large MicroLED screen or a really advanced theater setup. Most of the time, if it requires install, we coordinate with local dealers, trades, and handymen — or we send our Jump Team for things like a quick 3-day theater install.

Do you still offer the Design Service?

Yes — but we've simplified it. Most people don't need a full Design Service, and we don't want to charge you for it if you don't. Most of the time, you need one or two simple questions answered and some direction within your budget. We can do that on a free 15-minute phone call, and get you a quote for gear.

If during that call we discover you're looking for something more involved, we'll kick it over to our full Design Service, which starts at $997.

Do you sell custom theaters?

Yes. We still love designing a high-end theater with custom Fortress seating, a killer laser projector or MicroLED, separate amplifiers, a pre-pro, and hi-fi sound. If that's what you're looking for, we'd love to help you design it — and we'll send our Jump Team to install.

What we've found is that a lot of clients just need something simple — one or two questions answered and a cool setup they can install themselves. But if you want to go big time, we're here for it.

Do you sell smart homes?

Yes. Our focus has changed a lot — we're a "Do It With You" model now. We design smart homes to be efficient and easy to maintain. We want the system to work for you and minimize your dependence on a dealer or certified programmer to keep it up to date.

If you're looking for a high-end, fully custom, Crestron-like solution, we're not your guys — we'd refer you to dealers in the market we know and trust.

What does the Jump Team cost?

If we send our Jump Team out, it's a $5,000 minimum. That includes travel and time for 3 days. We'll send two experienced service professionals and dedicate one virtual support person full-time to assist with programming. We mostly see this on high-end theaters, MicroLED installs, and the occasional smart home build.

Is it Tym or SmartHome Brothers?

It's both. Our company is officially called Tym — just Tym. A few years ago, a team member wanted to rebrand and create a channel kind of like the Property Brothers but for smart homes. We never finished that transition. Maybe some day.

For now, most of our social media handles say SmartHome Brothers, and our website says Tym.
